Character Studies

Heyyyy there.

Welp, I've been busy these days...so much Mystery Skulls! I have almost abandoned my Hetalia fanfictions because I am so busy making doodles and drabbles for the Ghost Gang. ^_^"

Anyway, while browsing some writing blogs, I decided to try and make a thorough character study based on my character Fern. I tried to make it delve as far as I possibly could into her personality quirks OUTSIDE her rather dark past, and try to focus on her interests, habits, and mannerisms. So please enjoy!
--------------------------------------

  • Gemini
    • Archetype: The Wander, The Messenger
    • Positives: Intellectual, adventurous, stimulating, pleasure-seeking
    • Negatives: Dishonest, detached, lack empathy, impulsive
    • Fears: Needing someone else despite being independent
    • When Mad: Violent, physical tantrums
    • When Sad: Silent, overthinks, detached
    • When Happy: More stable sense of self, productive, casual demeanor
    • When Nervous: Restless, easily distracted, rapid speech, chest discomfort
    • In Love: Relationship builds from friendship to love
    • With Money: Loses track of balances
  • Personality Traits
    • Positive: Active, adventurous, ambitious, brave, bright, calm, careful, courageous, determined, diligent, dynamic, emotional, forceful, frank, generous, hard-working, independent, intellectual, inventive, loyal, modest, persistent, philosophical, powerful, practical, quick-witted, reliable, resourceful, sensible, sensitive, sincere, thoughtful, tough, understanding, willing, witty
    • Negative: Aggressive, aloof, anxious, argumentative, belittling, bossy, cold, combative, competitive, critical, cynical, disagreeable, doesn’t listen, easily aggravated, glares often, grumpy, hard, hot-tempered, impulsive, moody, outspoken, overly serious, proud, rash, sarcastic, stubborn, temperamental, troubled, violent
  • Type: ESTJ
  • Home: Before moving to Adventure City and living in the castle with Ryn and Sonic, Fern actually had a small traditional house in Chun’nan. It is still her property, but she almost never really stayed there long enough to really call it “home”. She sometimes does take time out to just go back and stay by herself in the house, but in the end she misses her friends too much and always comes back early. On the outside, her house would look like this. The inside would look like this, and her room would be like this.
  • Eyes: Unlike Sonic’s emerald green eyes or Amy’s bright green ones, Fern’s eyes are the color of fresh lime juice. Her eyes have this unusual tendency to sparkle when in perfect light, which makes her look really pretty. She doesn’t realize how pretty her eyes really are, but still doesn’t like it when Sonic accidentally calls her eyes “limeade-colored”.
  • Hair: Fern does take good care of her hair, but doesn’t think much about styling it. She used to wash it in the waterfalls by her old house, and whatever was in the water made her hair really clean. It feels like silk and is really long, and she never really thinks about cutting it. She also feels very attached to her sidetails.
  • Clothes: Fern didn’t like dresses at all when she was a kid, and still didn’t like them much when she met Ryn and reunited with Sonic. However, once Chip had been resealed and the team “started over”, Fern decided to start wearing dresses and fancier wear as a sign she changed.
  • Animals: Fern has a big attachment to pandas. Mostly because they remind her of Sky Island, where there were a lot of pandas. She once raised a baby panda as a kid, named Meronpan. She misses him to this day. (Sonic is planning to get her another panda for Christmas, though.) In general, though, Fern adores animals and doesn’t like to hurt them, even when they scare her.
  • Accent: When Fern first left Sky Island and started mingling more in Asia, she started developing a bit of a Japanese accent and speaks in Kansai dialect. She still kind of rolls R’s unintentionally and puts accents on L’s more than necessary.
  • Food: Despite her skinny figure and usual airiness, Fern really does love food. While her favorite would have to be coconuts (anything coconut: ice pops, candies, cakes, cream pies, milk, etc.), she also enjoys fish (especially fatty tuna and yellowtail), red meat, and apples. She also tends to be one of those people that will try absolutely anything, like grilled pork guts or something. However, she is allergic to peaches.
  • Instruments: Fern plays electric guitar in the team’s band, but has mastered other instruments. She is decent at drums and piano, but she’s actually very skilled at the erhu. She learned it from an old monk in Chun’nan, and sometimes plays when she’s really stressed.
  • Worry: When Fern worries, she worries. She often spends a lot of time thinking about the person she’s worried about, and sometimes can’t sleep because she’s so terrified they’re in need. Of course, due to her Tsundere nature, she never admits that she does so.
  • Voice: Fern’s voice’s main trait is that it constantly changes pitch. Her voice isn’t rough or scratchy, but not exactly feminine (think of Natsumi Hinata’s voice). When she’s mad or yelling, it gets lower, but when she’s excited or being inquisitive, it gets higher.
  • Theme Songs: When it comes to Fern, her themes are usually some brand of Asian electronica (such as Izure Ayame Kakakitsubata or TSUBAKI). Because Fern is a rather complex but very fiery person combined with her involvement in Asian culture, I thought Fern’s themes and battle BGM would be some sort of Chinese/Japanesque sort of music (such as mixing erhu or traditional-style with dubstep or electro house).
  • Body: Fern’s body certainly is unique. She’s not that tall for her age, but the way her limbs are you’d get the impression that she is. Her arms and legs are really long and sort of lanky, and they give her a loose impression when she waves her arms or lets her arms swing as she walks. Figure-wise, she’s hourglass-shaped, and sometimes feels self-conscious around the other girls for having a more curvy figure than most.
  • Nationality and Culture: Fern is, in all essence, totally Asian. We’re not actually aware of where exactly in Asia she came from (because she does practice some Chinese customs but also practices Japanese martial arts and has knowledge of both cultures), but no matter where she’s from she is supposed to be a Chinese/Japanese sort of mix. In a way, Fern sometimes feels a little embarrassed that she acts more Asian than the Milky Twins (who are from Hokkaido).
  • Religion: Fern isn’t the most religious around, but she does believe in something. She currently practices Shintoism, but according to her she used to be a Taoist (but gave it up after running away from the army).
  • Dragons: Fern has always been absolutely awed by Chinese dragons. To her, they embody true godliness, and she always dreamed of being in the presence of one. Sonic enjoys commenting on her “oriental mindset” because of this.
  • Blood Type: Fern has AB blood.
  • Handwriting: Because Fern does do calligraphy from time to time, her handwriting is sort of swishy.
  • Combat: Fern is strictly a hand-to-hand combat person. Her tuition of samurai technique has made her extremely lithe and almost graceful in her movements, which aids her a lot in her attacks. She’s especially good at using bladed weapons (mostly her leaves and katanas) but has used daggers, naginatas, and scythes. She just can’t use a battle axe or halberd for the life of her.
  • Hobbies: Fern does a number of things for pleasure when she’s got nothing to do in particular. Because she enjoys travelling, she often collects postcards from numerous location and puts them in a box in her room (most of them are either from China or from Thailand). Even though Fern doesn’t think of herself as an artist, she also occasionally draws comics or paints pictures when she feels inspiration. Once in a while, she even takes things from Kululu’s labs and attempts to teach herself mechanics, even though it never was her strong point.
  • Quirks: Fern, when she’s calm, is actually a very strange but very interesting person. When she’s not engaged in some sort of conversation (especially with Sonic), she tends to reveal a lot of her rather strange mannerisms and interests. When Fern is bored, she’ll sometimes read books upside-down or try to read backwards to entertain herself (and it works). She also talks to herself a lot and occasionally to plants if there’s no one in the room to watch her do so.
  • Pokemon: In-TWA-universe, Fern does enjoy playing Pokemon. She’s doesn’t like to admit it to Sonic, though, that she thinks the Pokemon are extremely adorable and she’d love to have one for real. In Poke-verse, though, Fern is an extraordinary leaf-type trainer; she loves her pokemon like they were her own children, and they love her back just as much (if not more for some).
    • Her Pokemon Team:
      • Leafeon (Haru, male, Careful nature) - Fern caught the Eevee once when exploring a bush in her early days, and also ended up fighting over it with Sonic to catch it. When it turned out to be a Leafeon, Fern took it in as her favorite and named it after the season she found it in--spring. Haru may or may not like her as more than a mother.
      • Meloetta (Utau, female, Gentle nature) - Fern was led to finding the Meloetta one night during a campout and saw her singing in a tree. Fern managed to gently coax the pokemon down and caught her before asking if she wanted to accompany her as her Pokemon. Utau has been Fern’s best friend along with Haru.
      • Phantump (Yuu-Yuu, male, Bold nature) - Fern encountered the Phantump during a festival, where he attempted to scare her. When the attempt failed, Fern remarked on it’s cuteness and decided to catch it, eventually befriending it.
      • Ralts (Odoru, female, Timid nature) - A tiny Ralts Fern found stuck in a thorny bush. After nursing it back to health, the Ralts became so awed by Fern that it followed her everywhere afterwards, even calling her something like “mama”. Fern caught it after giving in, and has become a mother figure to it ever since.
      • Zygarde (Nazonazo, male, Mild nature) - Fern actually fought the Zygarde before capturing it when it ambushed her on a path. The Zygarde found her to be a worthy opponent and became her Pokemon. It might be...tsundere towards her.
      • Froslass (Oujo, female, Relaxed nature) - Fern found the pokemon when adventuring in the mountains with Sonic. The Froslass caught off guard and she caught it, only realizing how useful it would be to have one. Froslass is the only one that actually frustrated Fern.
  • Linguistics: Fern does a bit of a talent for linguistics. With English as her main tongue, she is fluent in Japanese (speaks in Kansai) and Mandarin Chinese. She also knows a reasonable amount of Thai and Vietnamese, but Cantonese and Taiwanese are two languages she has trouble with. As for European languages, she knows enough conversational French, Italian, and German to get through a day.

Art of the Day

Hey! I have some new things.

I now present May Girl and Ame ga Furu Mae Ni. I must say that my main objective with these works was to show Milkshake's childish innocence and her general happiness to be alive. Plus, I wanted to see how I could make color art that reminds me of books like Ivy and Bean or Finally.

Art of the Day

Yello! I'm back!

I'm rapidly switching fandoms at the moment, because I had a bit of Keroro love (Shurara Corps yay) and then switched in-between My Little Pony and Sonic. I was thinking about some color art, though, and drew up a piece of my character Fern as she grows up in the story. Unlike the previous piece I did for Fern's birthday, this is as she ages in my story, not her character designs.

First on the left: 26 years
Second to the left: 18 years
Second to the right: Current, 15-16 years
Last on the right: 11 years

Art of the Day

Today's art is just finished, and is my artwork for the dubstep song "Deception" featuring Megurine Luka.
I'd say this piece is set in the Senbonzakura arc of my Team World Adventure series, where Kuro's return ends up driving Fern mad and goes on a brief tangent.

SORRY EVERYBODY

I'm sorry, I've been delayed all week because I was making new November strips to kickstart the comic.

So! Art. Today's art shall be my improved version of Strobo Nights, which I have wanted to do for a while. Here it is!
As for music this week, I shall post the beautiful "Dear My Friend" by Brent Cash. I freaking underestimated this song in levels of feels and it seriously made me sob when I heard in Sonic Unleashed. Chip was the most adorable little dork and I sincerely miss him. Thank you, Archie, for bringing him back for the comics, though! (But I'm still mad that you keep teasing me with Werehog hints.)

UPDATE

VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!

I am starting a 4-koma project called the "November York 4-koma Project" (I know, uncreative title.). The point is, the 4-koma will start as soon as I start sketching and I plan that it will start next Friday. (I have a week!)
I'll have to work on the November York first story some more, so at least you guys have something to look at while I'm drawing.
I WILL TRY!

Anyways, to read the comic, I'll set up a secondary blog so you can read it once it officially begins. It'll start as manga pages, though. I'll be busy this week. -_-'

OK? OK! I'll see you guys later for the featured artwork!

I have returned!

Hey, everyone! I'm back in the study! Texas was great, by the way. But it's REALLY HOT. Honestly.
Now, then? I guess I owe some art and music for the blog, right? Cool.

OK, for the Art Post for today, I'll put up "Corona -wobble magic library mix-". It's a FANTASTIC mix by the wonderful Kamomesano on SoundCloud!
Here is the art:
And here is the song:

For the Music of the Week, I'll nominate the lovely song "Kisaragi Attention" by Jin/Shizen no Teki-P. I love the Kagerou series and I am an active shipper of HibiMomo. HATERS GONNA HATE.

OK, well, I'll see you guys tomorrow! I'm tired.

Art Post of the Day #9

Today's art, or rather, the last art I'll be able to post till I get back from Texas, is for the song "SPiCa" by Hatsune Miku. I had an original version, but I redid it and called it the "Celestial Edit".

So, here it is!

Art Post of the Day #7

Today's art post is for the latest Music of the Week, "Izure Ayame Kakitsubata". This one took FOREVER but I'm glad it came out well.
(OK, mostly I was trying to shake off the fear from seeing a rather creepy Sonic CD sound test thingie but whatever I liked making this.)

Art of the Day #5

Today's art post is the cover art for my latest oneshot story, Tomorrow, Before the Rain. It's a small reflection story that can be read here:

Anyways, here is the art! ^_^

Art Post of the Day #4

Today's art is my latest version of the song "ALICE HUMAN SACRIFICE".

I LOVE this piece, I'm very proud of it, but DEAR LORD does it take a lot of work. I have draw it out, then edit it (which means darken the colors, brighten the eyes, put in a border, add in all the blood and then put the caption) which leaves me a little tired after making it.
It's worth it, though. Haha XD

Enjoy!

Happy Anniversary, Fern!

Today is my original character Fern Midori's anniversary/birthday!

Fern was the first character I had ever created, all the way in 2010, but she was scrapped along with an old series I had planned to make. But, when 2012 came along, I revived her to be my first original character.
So, here is her birthday pic! *claps* From left to right are her 2014 design, her 2012 design and her original 2010.

Art Post of the Day #3

Today's art is Colors, a pic that shows each respectable character of mine in their signature color. This was the first time I did completely colored work and design. Lineless, no? XD

So, the characters in the picture are as follows (left to right):

Milkshake Milky is Red
Blackberry Utsubyou is Blue
Himawari Hanabira is Yellow
Fern Midori is Green
Bubblegum Sweet is Pink
and Ryn is Purple

^_^ Enjoy!

Staging Wednesday Chap. 1 - Wednesday's Dream

Wednesday trekked lazily into the drama room.
It was no secret that Wednesday despised school. Sure, she was actually a wonderful student and often got top grades, but she still hated it. She didn't see the point of having to get up in the early hours of the morning just to go to a shabby building and be forced to learn English and math.
However, there was only one class that made Wednesday even tolerate coming to school, and that class was drama. Here, she could act out her dreams.
She took a seat in the front row, like she always did. As she sat down, a girl with jet black hair in pigtails plopped down next to her. "Hi, Wednesday!" the girl said cheerfully.
"Hi, Haruka," said Wednesday, smiling slightly. Haruka was Wednesday's best friend, a Japanese-American who was fascinated by voice acting and the art of making grilled cheese sandwiches (Wednesday never really understood that).
The two talked about random matters as students filed into the room, but things took a turn when Haruka mentioned their drama teacher, Ms. Labelle, had said she had an announcement.
"What kind of announcement?" asked Wednesday cautiously. Everybody knew Ms. Labelle's announcements usually ended in trouble.
"I don't know," replied Haruka. "But I overheard her telling the math teacher that she had something "new and creative" planned, and that she knew "the perfect person, the chosen one" that could pull it off." Haruka, despite her slight Asian accent, imitated Ms. Labelle's voice to perfection.
Before Wednesday could comment, the bell rang and class began. Ms. Labelle dramatically opened the curtains and stepped out onto the stage, facing the 30 wide-eyed faces before her.
"Good morning, everyone!" said Ms. Labelle.
"Good morning," said the class.
"First of all, I'd like to congratulate everyone on last week's performance," said Ms. Labelle. "Even if it did not go perfectly as planned, I am still very proud of you for keeping calm and carrying on, so to speak."
The kids looked at each other. It was true--the last play that was put on by the class was called "The Chinese Wonderland", which was about a lost princess who ends up in a strange other kingdom and is chased by jiangshis or whatever. The point was, that a kid who was playing a jiangshi accidentally hopped off the stage, and one girl tried doing a stage dive during a musical number. It definitely wasn't the best night ever, especially to Wednesday, who had spent half the play putting a hand to her face.
Ms. Labelle continued, "However, that is behind us now. Our next project will be another original act, which will be put on by a mystery person. I will not tell you that yet. Anyways, let us begin our acting practice."

*****

After at least 30 minutes of doing random monologues on the stage, the bell rang and class was dismissed to lunch. The class almost stampeded out, including Haruka (she knew there would be Panini sandwiches for lunch).
Before she could exit, Ms. Labelle called Wednesday to her desk. Wednesday nervously walked to her teacher's office, wiping her sweaty hands on her coat.
"Hello, Wednesday," said Ms. Labelle calmly.
"H-hello, Ms. Labelle," said Wednesday, her voice shaky.
"Do not worry, you're not in trouble." Wednesday relaxed a bit. "I have a very important task for you."
Looking into Wednesday's deep blue eyes, Ms. Labelle said, "I would like you to produce the drama class's next performance."

Art Post of the Day #2

Today's art post is a promo poster for my original mystery series, The Adventures of November York. The series follows the adventures of a detective named November York (who is essentially myself) as she solves mysteries with her friends codenamed Chip, Bubbles, Sketch, Blue and Rom. Rom didn't make it onto this poster when I made this picture, but he still deserves an honorable mention. All the characters are expies of my friends and family.
The last day of school is tomorrow! Whoopie! ^_^

Wednesday's Day Chap. 1 - Sunday

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
The days of the week make up the months of the year. Each day has a name, and so do the months.
But why don't the weeks of the month have names? They occur all the time, like the days and the months. Even then, what would the weeks be called? Firstweek? Mayweek? Overweek? Something of that nature?
That's what Wednesday Gretzky was wondering as she sat on her bed one rainy Sunday morning. Like that was a surprise. It rained every day. Only 80 days out of 365 were actually bright and sunny. Willows, Oregon was just not a sunny place.
Wednesday wondered about that, too. Willows was very appropriately named. One, because it was constantly raining and wet. Two, because of the rain, there were a lot of weeping willow trees around. Heck, Wednesday's house was just a hop and skip away from the woods, which was made up of weeping willows. And three, it was so green the town itself could remind you of a willow.
To the average person, living in such a soupy, sleepy place like Willows would be a dreadfully boring experience. But no. It was Wednesday's home.
Wednesday had been born in Willows. Her family was a funny bunch--she had a mom, and a dad, a big brother named Silver and a little sister named Yume (pronounced yoo-meh). She was the middle child, of course. No surprise there.
Of course, it contributed to her rather unique name: Wednesday. She had this name because her parents were so busy trying to gather materials for their new baby that they had no name for her when she came. But, because she was the second child and it was a Wednesday the day of her birth, her parents decided to name the little girl Wednesday.
Wednesday was often teased for her name. Everyone admitted that was pretty in a way, but it was a bit too...out there. Wednesday was supposed to be a day in the week, so nobody had even known that someone could be named Wednesday. So, many kids pestered her for it, asking why exactly she was named such. She either told them or replied with a snarky comment.
It didn't help that she was abnormal in almost every way: her hair was an odd, ashy color, her eyes were dark ocean blue and her skin was pale like ivory. She had a wide assortment of hats that she never went out without wearing. She loved eating fruits and vegetables and was a regular coffee drinker. She knew how to play a bassoon. She read books on how certain foods reacted to chemicals. She knew how to speak and read Russian fluently. She despised sports. She drew pictures of caterpillars and frogs in her notebooks.
She just was not...usual.
Wednesday yawned and looked at the clock on her desk. 6:45.
She rolled her eyes and opened the window the slightest crack, so that the sound of rain quietly filtered in. Then, she dragged herself back to her bed and curled under the covers, going back to sleep.
